What are HDD and SSD drives?

Today, when the latest games in the gaming industry weigh fifty gigabytes or more, and the number of photos stored by an average user is approaching infinity, the question of the capacity of your drives is acute. There are two types of drives - SSD and HDD.

The latest models of laptops and PCs use SSD drives, while HDD drives are very rare nowadays - the mass user prefers download speed over capacity. In fact, HDDs are now needed only by artists, designers, people who edit or shoot video/photos, in general, people who need the maximum possible number of gigabytes.

Features and differences between HDD and SSD

What's the difference between an SSD and a mechanical hard disk? The simple answer is that an SSD has no moving parts and functions similarly to a USB flash drive, while a mechanical hard disk has magnetic tape and many moving parts. An SSD is also much smaller and takes up less space in the PC case, and in some cases, it can even be installed directly on the motherboard. SSDs are also much faster - up to 10 times faster than HDDs.

SSD stands for Solid State Drive. Like a USB drive, data is stored in microchips. Storing data on a chip is what makes SSDs much faster. A typical SSD uses so-called NAND-based flash memory, which is non-volatile memory. The property of non-volatile memory is that it does not forget where the data is stored when the drive is turned off.

An SSD does not have any mechanical components to read and write data, instead it relies on an on-board processor called a controller to perform operations related to reading and writing data. The controller is a very important factor when determining SSD read and write speeds, as the controller will make decisions about where it stores, retrieves, caches, and purges data that can determine the overall performance of the SSD.

Hard disk drives, or HDDs, were first introduced by IBM in 1956 and use magnetism to store data on a rotating platter. The read/write head floats above the spinning disk, reading and writing data. The faster the platter spins, the faster the hard disk can operate. Typical modern portable drives spin at either 5,400 RPM (revolutions per minute) or 7,200 RPM, although some server models have speeds up to 15,000 RPM.

When it comes to appearance, the most common hard drive size for laptop computers is the 2.5-inch form factor, while desktop computers use the larger 3.5-inch form factor. The larger size allows for more platters to be placed inside, thus increasing storage capacity.

SSDs have lower power consumption, averaging 2-3 watts, which provides a battery charge for 30+ minutes. HDDs have a power consumption of 6-7 watts.

SSD drives usually have a capacity of no more than 2 TB for laptop-sized drives and no more than 4 TB for desktop computers. HDDs usually have a capacity of about 500 GB (maximum 2 TB) for laptop-sized disks and no more than 10 TB for desktop computers.

The operating system boot time for SSD drives is about 10-13 seconds, while for HDD disks it is 30-40 seconds.

Other differences between HDDs and SSDs include the following:

  • SSD is quieter.
  • There is no vibration in the SSD.
  • HDDs open files more slowly.

However, drives have one not-so-pleasant feature: they break very quickly, get scratched, squeezed by heads with tape, and simply get clogged with a lot of necessary information. The solution to these problems can be to replace the disk with a better one - a new and more capacious one, for example, by exchanging HDD for SSD.

Upgrade HDD, SSD (Ukraine)

You can order an HDD to SSD swap in a ready-made assembly in the PowerUp store by adding it to the cart along with the selected workstation. You can exchange not only HDD for SSD, but also SSD for SSD, HDD for HDD. The difference in volume when replacing is different.

Delivery by Nova Poshta in Ukraine or by courier in Kyiv. Pickup from the store is possible. Payment by cash, online banking, card, and credit. The store's warranty lasts 12-24 months, depending on the services selected.
